Turkish jets shoot down warplane at Syrian border

Turkish fighter jets shot down a Russian warplane on Tuesday night near the Syrian border, forcing its pilots to parachute out as civilians filmed the destruction, officials said.

The Officials said the plane was shot down because it violated airspace restrictions, and the pilots ignored 10 warnings in five minutes about the breach. The plane reportedly went down in a mountainous region in the province of Latakia.

After the shooting, social media users posted footage of the destruction, showing two pilots parachuting from the jet before it crashes. One user, who describes himself as a journalist in the Middle East, posted a video purportedly showing the plane plunging as a person on the ground chants "Allahu Akbar."
The condition of the pilots is unknown.
