Father Slits his wife and children's throats and commits suicide
A twisted father slit his wife and two children's throats on Sunday morning, before he died of a drug overdose in a murder-suicide.
The dad turned the knife on himself several times, cutting his wrist, forearms and throat, but did not die from the wounds, Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich said.
In a horrific display arranged by the father, the two boys, 2-year-old Liam and 4-year-old Caden were found in their beds, with covers pulled up to their necks and children's toys and dolls surrounding them.
Underneath the covers, it was revealed both of the dead brothers were slashed across their throats, the coroner said.
"As a father of a little boy, it was heartbreaking for me," Cvitanovich told the Daily News.
His 40-year-old wife, Kelli Mata, also suffered a deep cut to her throat and a fractured skull. She was found dead in the living room, next to the TV.
Because she had no defensive wounds, it was likely she was knocked unconscious and then slain, officials said.
It is unclear what drugs David Mata overdosed on, as authorities are still awaiting results of a toxicology test, but investigators found several open prescription pill bottles in the kitchen, where he was found dead. Toxicology tests for David Mata will take several days to several weeks to return.
"We've seen some horrible, bad cases," the coroner said. "This is among the worst in my eight years affiliated with our office."
In 2003, the fatal father was charged for cocaine possession, Col. John Fortunato said. He was also charged in 2010 for attacking Kelli.
The family's 18-year-old daughter called police on Sunday morning after she returned home from a hunting trip and saw her dead family in the Marrero home. She ran out crying and called for help.
