6-year-old Shoots Herself, Father Charged

The father of the girl who apparently fatally shot herself with a loaded gun in her family’s home on Saturday has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct, authorities said.

Police say 6-year-old Ja’Mecca Smith found a loaded gun in sofa cushions in her home early Saturday morning and shot herself in the head, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
Ja’Mecca died around 11 a.m. Saturday inside her home located at 1041 Martin St.
Her father had apparently fled the scene briefly but returned to speak with detectives, authorities said.
At the time of the incident, there were reportedly at least four other children in the home as well as two adults, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
